FoodDrinkEurope welcomes the Slovak Presidency
In July, Slovakia took the helm of the Presidency of the Council for the first time since joining the EU in 2004. We want to thank the Dutch Presidency for their hard work and positive collaboration and welcome Slovakia. The Slovak Presidency will focus on four key themes, specifically aimed at producing tangible results for citizens; an economically stronger Europe, modernising the Internal Market, sustainable migration and asylum policies, and a more globally-engaged Europe. More specifically for the food and drink sector, the Presidency has identified the following priorities which it intends to advance over the coming six-month period: healthier diets and improving food quality, the role of farmers in the food supply chain, youth employment and skills, the EU’s transition towards a circular economy, and advancing trade talks with the US, Canada and Japan.
FoodDrinkEurope’s Director General, Mella Frewen, was invited to speak at the International Experts’ Conference on ‘Strengthening the Farmer’s Position in the Food Supply Chain’, organised by the Slovak Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which took place during the official inauguration of the Presidency in Bratislava.
As the largest manufacturing sector in the EU in terms of turnover and employment, we look forward to engaging actively with the Slovaks on these key priorities in order to ensure the sustained growth of Europe’s food and drink sector.
