FoodDrinkEurope and agri-food chain partners present vision at European Parliament
On 23 September, the Agri-Food Chain Coalition, of which FoodDrinkEurope is a member, presented its ‘Food for Thought’ vision to MEPs at a well-attended reception in the European Parliament. The Vision, which was first presented to EU agriculture ministers earlier in the year, outlines a clear set of policy recommendations to meet the challenges and unleash the full potential of the agri-food sector. The host of the parliamentary reception, Scottish Conservative MEP Ian Duncan welcomed the central role of innovation in the Vision, as he emphasised the importance of ‘driving forward knowledge and research, particularly among young people as a way to breathe new life into our agricultural sector and build smarter, better regulation from the ground up.’
The chair of the EP agriculture and rural affairs committee Czeslaw Adam Siekierski assured the attendees that unlocking the potential and addressing the challenges of the agri-food sector were priorities for his committee.
Speaking on behalf of the Coalition partners, FoodDrinkEurope Director General Mella Frewen encouraged policymakers at EU and national level to give ‘serious consideration’ to the recommendations outlined in the Vision thereby ‘ensuring that agriculture and the food industry can continue to meet the ever changing needs of consumers, grow sustainably, innovate and create jobs.’
