In so doing, the organisation of Europe’s food and drink industry called upon all interested parties and stakeholders to join forces and look ahead to tackle together today’s societal challenges related to nutrition and health. Small Scale, Big Impact: MEPs nominate their local food and drink SMEs

Competitiveness

Last year, we launched the campaign Small Scale, Big Impact to promote the importance of European food and drink Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to European policy-makers. This year, we are expanding the project to include more SMEs across Europe with additional support from the European Institutions. To achieve this, we have connected with key Members of the European Parliament from all 28 member states, inviting them to select an SME from their region that deserves greater recognition. Brexit: The road to the future EU27/UK relationship

FoodDrinkEurope and its members have underlined the need to minimise the business impact of the UK’s departure on European food and drink companies and the necessity to establish a new and sustainable working relationship as quickly as possible. EU-27 food and drink trade with the UK is worth some €45 billion, making it the EU’s largest trading partner. Read more

The revised CAP enabler of growth for the food and drink industry

As DG Agriculture and Rural Development prepares the Impact Assessment for modernising and simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), FoodDrinkEurope stresses once more that the CAP is of crucial importance for ensuring the security of supply of agricultural raw materials for the production of food, in terms of quantity and quality. FoodDrinkEurope joined EU Commissioner Phil Hogan and agri-food business delegates in high-level trade mission to Canada

Competitiveness

Mella Frewen, Director General of FoodDrinkEurope, accompanied EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan and a delegation of 60 EU agri-food producers and associations from 23 Member States in a high-level trade mission to Canada. The mission coincided with the opening of the SIAL Canada 2017 food exhibition where the EU featured as the region of honour. Read more

FoodDrinkEurope shortlisted as a finalist for The European Excellence Awards in Public Affairs

FoodDrinkEurope was shortlisted as finalist in the European Excellence Awards in Public Affairs in the Food & Beverage category, for its work on “Every Meal Matters”, the food donation guidelines, which encourage and make it easier for food manufacturers and retailers to donate their food surpluses to food banks. 

2017: A milestone year for the EU and for the European food law

General News

2017 marks the 15th anniversary of European food law. It was 21 February 2002 when the EU General Food Law entered into force and Europe’s food and drink industry took stock of this milestone and the impact it has had on European food safety legislation by ensuring that Europe’s food is and remains the safest in the world. This year also brings one more important anniversary: On 25 March 1957, the Treaty of Rome on the Functioning of the European Union was signed, leading to the creation of a common market. FoodDrinkEurope welcomes the Estonian Presidency programme

On 1 July, Estonia will take the helm of the Presidency of the Council for the first time since joining the EU in 2004. We take this opportunity to thank the Maltese Presidency for their hard work and positive collaboration and welcome Estonia. Read more

A view from the European Parliament

2017 continues to be another significant year with agri-food issues remaining high on the European Parliament’s agenda. We have seen progress on a number of files in recent months, in particular in the areas of food waste, the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, emissions effort-sharing, and Brexit. Read more
