The new High Level Forum for a better functioning food supply chain ready to kick off its activities

The High Level Forum (HLF) for a better functioning food supply chain, the mandate of which has recently been renewed for another 4 years, will start its ambitious new line of work shortly under the chairmanship of Commissioner Bienkowska. The Forum’s mission will be to assist the Commission with the development of industrial policy for the agri-food sector up to 2019. Read more

The role of Agricultural Emissions in the EU’s Climate Targets

The EU has set a target to reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2030, which is part of the EU 2030 climate and energy framework. In the second quarter of 2016, the European Commission will present a legislative proposal to also include emissions from agricultural soils and forestry, known as LULUCF (Land use, Land Use Change and Forestry), in the 2030 target. European Technology Platform (ETP) ‘Food for Life’ renews vision & identity under new leadership team

Established back in 2005 under the management of FoodDrinkEurope, the ETP ‘Food for Life’ is an industry-led, public/private partnership encouraged by the European Commission, with the aim to drive forward innovation in the food and drink industry to the benefit of a sustainable society. This platform has undergone in 2015 a ‘rejuvenation’ process, steered by the FoodDrinkEurope Board. Free online tool helps food companies fight fraud to protect consumers

Fraudsters will find it harder to infiltrate supply chains and profit from food fraud with the release of a new industry tool designed to help fight fraud and protect consumers. SSAFE and PwC say this free tool – developed by SSAFE in partnership with PwC, Wageningen University, VU University Amsterdam and food industry leaders around the world – will help food companies assess their food fraud vulnerabilities. What a circular economy approach means for the food & drink sector

This past December, the European Commission published the Circular Economy package, a welcome move since the food and drink industry has been supported the Commission to continue promoting a resource-efficient and sustainable economy. Europe’s food and drink industry is committed to maximising the use of available resources and to continuously improving waste management practices at every stage along the food supply chain, whilst at the same time continuing to ensure food safety. Non-financial information reporting continues to be high on the European agenda. The European Commission recently launched a public consultation on its “Guidelines for the implementation of non-financial information reporting”, as originally planned in the related Directive. Read more
